The First Cameleers
The first Middle Eastern migrants to Australia were mostly likely the first cameleers. They went by the names of Dost Mohammed Kahn, Ehsan Kahn and Baluch in 1860. They arrived in Victoria accompanied by 24 camels, to make the trek from the far south of Australia to the north of the continent.
Another well know Middle Eastern migrant was Faiz Mahomet, arriving in the early 1870s to manage a camel station in South Australia. after 10 years of work, Faiz expanded operations to Western Australia to take advantage of the Gold Rush.
